A perspective
(Contribution for the development of Aomori)

Aomori, where Hirosaki Univ. is located, is expected to be able to provide large amounts of renewable energy. Moreover, Aomori is one of the areas where agriculture is actively carried out. If these two strengths are joined, that is, if we can use renewable energy to agriculture, we may be able to make a new positive impression for Aomori. However, the supply of renewable energy is influenced by the time and the climates. Thus, we need to storage renewable energy as another stable form. For this issue, we propose the storage in Magnesium because magnesium has several features relevant to energy as shown in Fig 1.

In the future, we dream to realize the magnesium economy in Aomori, whose concept is shown in Fig 2. First of all, magnesium chloride is extracted from seawater, and convert to magnesium using renewable energy. This process corresponds the strage of renewable energy in magnesium. Next, ammonia is produced using the magnesium as a reducing agent. During this process, magnesium chloride is also formed as a by-product; but this material can again to convert into magnesium to achieve the sustainable process. Finally, ammonia is transformed to feritilizer for agreculture. Our present projects are possible to be incorporated in this concept. For example, coordination compounds with flexible ancillary ligands can be used as catalysts for the ammonia synthesis with magnesium as a reducing agent. Moreover, crystalline hydrogen bond networks are a possible storage material of ammonia.

The concept in the previeous paragraph is difficult to come true only our expertise in chemistry, and collaboration with other experts, industries, and local governments is essential.
